Position: Team Leader for EFI Forest Europe Support Team
Overview
The European Forest Institute (EFI) is an international organisation with 29 member countries and around
120 associate and affiliate member organisations. EFI undertakes forest research and policy support at pan-
European and global level, with headquarters located in Joensuu, Finland. EFI has its other main offices in
Barcelona, Bonn and Brussels. The Institute has app. 120 staff members and has an annual turnover of app.

Forest Europe (FE) (formerly known as the Ministerial Conference on the Protection of Forests in Europe -
MCPFE and established on 18 December 1990) is Europe ́s high level political process that develops common
strategies for its 47 signatories (46 European countries and the European Union) on sustainable management
of forests (including the protection of forests) in the Pan-European region. It takes decisions on common
aspects of the highest political relevance regarding forests, forestry and forest related issues in order to
maximise the contribution of European forests to the ecological, social and economic well-being of the
region.

In 2021, Germany will assume the presidency of the Forest Europe process (http://foresteurope.org) and also
become the host of the Liaision Unit, which will be located in Bonn (LUBo) in the period 1.1.2021 till
31.12.2024. EFI intends to support to the work of FE by providing science-informed policy support and
communication services as agreed with LUBo, while ensure a strong link to the scientific and policy support
capacities of EFI member organisations in different countries.

Key responsibilities will include:
• Support coordinated and efficient implementation of the Forest Europe science-policy interface activities;
• Lead the conceptual development and operational implementation of a pan-European forest risk knowledge mechanism within FE;
• Overall support to the development and implementation of Forest Europe work programme and to preparations of meetings and the ministerial conference in close cooperation with the LUBo core team;
• Responsible for internal project management and leadership of the EFI LUBo support team;
• Ensure fluent and efficient communication and cooperation with LUBo.

Qualifications:
• PhD degree in relevant field.
• At least 8 year of relevant work experience.
• Good understanding of the Forest Europe process and other international forest-related processes.
• Experience in coordinating science-policy support work in natural resources issues.
• Excellent communications skills as well as experience and willingnes to proactively work with media.
• Excellent organisation and managerial skills, and ability to create an inspiring team environment.
• Excellent English skills, knowledge of other European languages is an asset.

Duty Station
The employee will be based at EFI’s Bonn Office, Germany.

Employment Conditions
The employee will be an EFI staff member. A fixed term appointment until end of 2024, with the possibility
for an extension. The successful candidate is expected to take up the position by October 2020 and should
be ready to work full time in Bonn.
