Position: Digital Hub Assistant
Location: Kakuma 3, Turkana County
Project: Learning through Education and Access to Skills for Employment Project (the LEAP Project)**

Background
World University Services of Canada (WUSC) is a Canadian non-profit organization with a mission to enhance education, economic opportunities, and empowerment for youth. We work with a diverse network of students, volunteers, institutions, governments, and businesses. Together, we foster youth- centered solutions to overcome inequality and exclusion.

With funding from the Global Affairs of Canada, WUSC is implementing the “Learning through Education and Access to Skills for Employment” Project (the LEAP Project) with the goal to increase the empowerment of adolescent girls and young women in Kalobeyei Settlement, Kakuma Refugee Camp, and the surrounding host communities in Turkana County. The project will enhance education opportunities for adolescent girls and provide access to gender responsive skills training and address young women’s livelihood needs through market-based skills and digitals skills training in order to participate in the online gig economy.

In line with the project objectives to enhance access to livelihood opportunities through digital skills training and online job opportunities, WUSC through the LEAP project is seeking to recruit a digital hub assistant to work in Kakuma 3, Turkana County.

Purpose of the role
The Hub Assistant will be the main point of contact for all IT and technical support at the digital hub, a computer lab with a capacity of 30+ workstations. The Hub Assistant will also be responsible for planning, development and implementation of hardware, software applications, programming and systems network & integration of a management information system. The IT Assistant advises the ICT digital hub management on IT solutions that will best help the hub grow and perform more efficiently. The Hub Assistant will work under the direct supervision of the Hub Manager.

Duties and Responsibilities
Support Services:
● Function as the main point of contact for IT related issues in the use of computers, software and other communication equipment
● Design, develop and maintain computer networks
● Provide technical advisory services in relation to new networking or appropriate technology for office use.
● Troubleshoot/diagnose IT problems and react accordingly
● Support users on IT best practices, internet and e-mail usage and appropriate course of action where problems are encountered
● Liaise with WUSC IT Officer on IT equipment that need repair/replacement
● Monitor all inventory for IT equipment and software, preparing inventory schedules as needed

Databases / Networking
● Oversee the ICT hub computer networks to ensure that they function smoothly**
● Install all new hardware, systems, and software for networks.
● Install, configure, and maintain network services, equipment and devices.
● Support administration of servers and server clusters
● Plan and support network and computing infrastructure.
● Perform troubleshooting analysis of servers, workstations and associated systems
● Document network problems and resolution for future reference
● Monitor system performance and implement performance tuning.
● Oversee software and network security.

Backup Antivirus and Security
● Perform data backups of all systems both on premise and clouds as scheduled and ensure data integrity
● Configure centralized antivirus admin kit and ensures antivirus program is up-to-date
● Manage user accounts, permissions, email, and anti-virus, anti-spam

Systems availability and Redundancy
● Maintain system performance and react pro-actively to issues to maximize uptime
● Continually perform preventative maintenance
● Assist with system upgrades and rollouts
● Maintain high availability of servers
● Train and support hub users on technologies
● Day-day maintenance of computers and network devices
● Any other duty assigned by the digital hub manager

Requirements
● Degree / diploma in Information Technology, Computer Science or a related discipline; professional certification (e.g. Microsoft Certified Systems Administrator (MCSA), CCNA, CompTIA A+, Networking N+) is an asset
● At least 2 years’ experience working in a busy IT support environment with excellent knowledge of enterprise networks and systems
● Experience of working with networked computing systems/windows TCP/IT networking experience, networks (LAN, WAN) and patch management
● Knowledge of and competence in Microsoft operating systems and office suites
● High level of hardware/software troubleshooting experience
● Knowledge of system security (e.g. intrusion detection systems) and data backup/recovery
● Able to work under difficult environmental conditions (i.e. the environment of Kakuma 3 Camp), and address environment-related concerns such as overheating, sand, power interruptions, etc.
● Good judgment and problem-solving skills
● Demonstrate a customer-focused, motivated and proactive approach to your work
● Strong planning, organization and problem-solving skills with ability to work hands-on, independently, and within team in a difficult work environment
● Strong problem-solving and analytical skills are needed in this occupation
● Possess strong analytical and conceptual skills.
● Proven ability to manage large varied workloads and deal constructively with stress and periods with long hours.
● Excellent interpersonal skills & demonstrated ability to establish effective working relations between programs & support
● Knowledge of digital skills and online job opportunities will be an added advantage
● Excellent communication skills in English; communication in another locally spoken language in the context of Kakuma 3 is a plus (Turkana; Nuer; Dinka; Somali, etc.)

Reporting Relationships:
The hub assistant will report to the hub manager and work closely with the LEAP team at WUSC Kenya.
