Reporting to the Chief Information Officer, the Head of Engineering will be responsible for leading the engineering effort to ensure effective development, enhancement and use of business intelligence, CRM and digital platforms.The Head of Engineering role is critical to the successful delivery of technology solutions to support our goal of providing better programming for children, better engagement with supporters, and more effective internal management.
The role holder will work as a strategic partner to ensure that our organisational outcomes for technical solutions and our IT development strategy are well defined and understood. They will rigorously challenge and question both organisational requirements and proposed solutions and technology choices as necessary.

Main Accountabilities
The Head of Engineering will be responsible for ensuring the effective development, enhancement and use of business intelligence, CRM and digital platforms. Key duties will focus on:Strategy
- Drive the vision, design and implementation of an effective platform strategy. Make this a strong and collaborative contribution to the Technical Design Authority function of the CIO
- Play a lead role in the development of SCUK’s Data and Analytics strategy
- Lead and manage the execution and evolution of platforms (data, BI and digital), software and application development (adobe systems - experience manager, target and analytics)
- Work alongside our Head of Service Delivery, Head of Business Architecture and Analysis, and Head of PMO to form a coherent leadership team for our Technology Department
- Lead a team of 20+ cross functional development and test staff, contractors and vendors
- Provide technical expertise guidance and direction to solution design and delivery
- Setting an overall strategy and workplan for the team, and ensuring optimal deployment of resources to meet requirements
- Ensuring the implementation of agile processes wherever appropriate and in all cases support engineers to participate in the methods chosen by projects
- Drive positive, proactive engagement with the wider organisation, bringing engineering into the solution design and analysis activities, and driving “can do” “yes if…” behaviours
Quality systems and methods
- Lead engineering techniques including DevOps / release management
- Set coding standards
- Own QA and testing methods, systems and environments
- Manage the development, documentation and enforcement of architecture and design standards and guidelines. Ensure that Save the Children has a complete, comprehensive and high-quality set of documents for its systems
- Keep abreast of new technologies and champion the use of data analytics and digital technologies in Save the Children’s work. Technical evangelist in areas such as data, BI, .NET, digital platforms (AEM, ACM etc.)
- Work effectively with colleagues across the Save the Children movement to ensure stronger alignment of systems within a coherent overall architecture
- Capability of becoming part of the broader iNGO tech community and keen to explore and contribute in order to share best practise and new opportunities
Person Profile
Essential Technical Skills Required- Proven track record in a similar role leading talented cross-functional engineering teams
- Solid and demonstrable experience in most of data, BI, .NET, digital platforms (CMS, email campaign, personalisation)
- Experience of agile delivery process
- Understanding of testing methods relating to delivery of platforms and associated applications and software
- Good understanding of how quality data and information can be used to make day to day business decisions
