Sales Manager

JOB DUTIES:

The key role of this position is that of a seasoned professional with several years of related experience including field, staff, support and supervisory assignments.
  • Direct reports include supervisors and managers within a Region (domestic and international locations).
  • The incumbent leads managers whose organizations act as a single point of contact in one or more of the following areas: warranty, prime product sales, parts sales, service training, dealer development and the administration of dealer programs. The position integrates diverse functions with inherently conflicting priorities and develops strategic initiatives. Decisions are multi-faceted and have impact beyond the business unit. Solutions must be developed, and parameters set for subordinate. The incumbent has a high freedom to act within significant transactional dollar amounts. Magnitude of responsibility is of high risk impacting a portion of the enterprise.
  • The incumbent understands and is current on customer/dealer markets and administers appropriate dealer programs to support and develop product sales, dealer effectiveness, overall segment growth, NPI process, process improvement, warranty policy, etc. The incumbent applies product and industry knowledge in support of Caterpillar, dealer and customer expectations and is responsible for long-term strategic planning within a 1-3-year horizon.
  • The incumbent interacts with high-level professionals, industry experts, industry associations and dealer associations and exhibits effective relationship development and communication skills. This position regularly calls on the Dealer Principal and the General Manager in an effort to influence their investment initiatives, which support Caterpillar’s strategic initiatives. The incumbent is viewed, by the Dealer Principal, as the singular authority on the broader business. The incumbent understands complex commercial issues, which can affect the business, such as local political situations, business and economic conditions and relates these back to the appropriate areas of Caterpillar for action. The incumbent must have demonstrated skills in the following leadership principles: business, career development, coaching, communication, customer satisfaction, empowerment, and fostering an enjoyable work climate.
  • The position manages a department through subordinate supervisors/managers and professionals. The incumbent provides direction, focus, motivation, and encouragement for subordinates. The position is responsible for all personnel issues and performance evaluation of subordinates.
  • Typical internal customers include various contacts throughout Caterpillar worldwide and its subsidiaries. External contacts include various companies who purchase services offered by Caterpillar. The position often confronts complex issues or problems, which require careful analysis and diagnosis. Problems are often unique, and solutions can require original approaches. The incumbent may modify existing approaches or develop new solutions. The incumbent establishes and then monitors general policies and guidelines for projects under his/her control to ensure specific, management goals are met, and desired results are achieved. The incumbent manages the incumbent accountability for profit/loss. Impacts key quality goals including Customer Satisfaction, Continuous Improvement, Timeliness, Accuracy, Efficiency, Cost Savings, Process Quality, etc. The position changes the way work is performed to meet quality goals for the measure(s) stated.
  • The position travels extensively; at least one full week each month.
  • Employee may also be responsible for performing other job duties occasionally as assigned.

BACKGROUND/EXPERIENCE:

The position requires thorough knowledge of company products and product applications, merchandising programs, and/or warranty practices and procedures. Broad company knowledge and strong understanding of dealer operations is also required. The position typically requires a college or university degree or equivalent experience. In addition, at least fifteen years of progressively responsible job-related experience are typically required including field, staff, support and supervisory assignments. Excellent interpersonal skills are required in order to deal with sensitive issues, develop others, or persuade others inside and outside the department to take specific actions. The ability to direct multi-functional activities is required and direction of multi-segment activities is preferred. Global experience (live outside of home country for more than 1 year) is also preferred.
